Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered a humiliating exit from the Paris 2024 Olympics on Wednesday, finishing dead last in their group without a single victory.
Randy Waldrum’s squad were outclassed in all three matches, falling 1-0 to Brazil in their opener before a 1-0 loss to Spain. Their tournament ended with a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Japan in their Group C finale at La Beaujoire Stadium.
The result means the Super Falcons finished bottom of their group without a single point. They lost all three matches, scoring just one goal while conceding five.
Nigeria needed a miracle win by three goals over Japan to sneak into the knockout stage, but their game plan fell flat. Japan’s Hamano Maika scored in the 22nd minute, and Tanaka Mina doubled the lead shortly after.
Jennifer Echegini scored a great goal just before halftime, giving Nigeria a chance to come back. But Japan’s Kitagawa Hikaru quickly scored again with a free kick, making it a two-goal lead again.
Despite a brief resurgence after Echegini’s goal, the Falcons couldn’t overcome Japan’s strong offence, ending their Olympic journey without a win.
The loss marks a disappointing end to Nigeria’s first Olympic appearance in 16 years. The team had previously qualified for the 2000, 2004, and 2008 Games.
