The coalition leading the #EndBadGovernance protests in Jos has announced a two-day suspension of its street demonstrations to pave the way for dialogue with relevant stakeholders.
This decision was made known by the coalition’s spokesperson, Enoch Vilret, while addressing journalists in Jos on Sunday, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.
According to Vilret, the suspension, which takes effect from Sunday, August 4, to Tuesday, August 6, is aimed at allowing for constructive dialogue with the authorities, as called for by President Bola Tinubu in his national broadcast on Sunday.
He emphasised that the coalition remains committed to its cause and is hopeful that this period of suspension will lead to fruitful discussions. However, he warned that if the expected dialogue does not materialise within the stipulated timeframe, the coalition will have no choice but to resume its peaceful protests.
Vilret clarified that the coalition is not the original organiser of the protests but rather a group of concerned leaders in Plateau State who have taken it upon themselves to coordinate and ensure the protests remain peaceful and orderly.
“Our primary aim is to guide and support the voices of our fellow citizens in a responsible and constructive manner,” he said.
The coalition also distanced itself from protesters carrying non-Nigerian flags, such as the Russian flag, and urged security forces to arrest individuals engaging in such behavior. Vilret also condemned plans by certain individuals to incite looting and vandalism, calling on security forces to take action against such activities.
“Such actions are not representative of our movement, and we urge security forces to arrest any individuals seen engaging in this behaviour, as it undermines the integrity of our cause,” he said.
The coalition reiterated its commitment to peaceful advocacy and urged Nigerians to remain law-abiding, expressing hope that the country will overcome its current challenges and become great again.
