Journalists for Public Health and Development Initiative, J4PD, a Bauchi-based Civil Society Organization has advocated the accelerated implementation of six months of paid maternity leave for working mothers that would enable them to concentrate on exclusive breastfeeding for their new babies.
Bashir Hassan Abubakar, J4PD’s Knowledge Management and Communication Advisor in a statement on the occasion of 2024 World Breastfeeding Week says accelerated implementation of the six months of paid maternity leave for Nursing mothers would enhance exclusive breastfeeding practice among working-class women.
The theme for this year’s WBW “Closing the Gaps: Breastfeeding Support for All”, beams searchlight on factors militating against exclusive breastfeeding and the need to address such gaps.
“When fully implemented at the National and state levels, it would enhance exclusive breastfeeding of infants to help their growth and development in the first days of life.
“During the six months paid leave, lactating mothers would focus more on breastfeeding their newborns without being worried by the rigorous nature of official duties that may impede the most significant stage of nurturing their babies,” the statement said.
