NewsNigeriaFG Identifies Protest Sponsors, Adds Them to Security Watch-list

The Nigerian government is taking firm measures to suppress the ongoing nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests. Authorities have frozen the bank accounts of individuals they suspect of sponsoring the protests and have placed them on a security watchlist.

Kemi Nandap, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), made this announcement during a meeting of security chiefs at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

She revealed that many of these sponsors are based abroad and will face arrest if they attempt to enter Nigeria.

“We have diaspora sponsors; they are on our watchlist. Any attempt they make to come into the country will be detected, and they will be apprehended and handed over to the appropriate authority,” Nandap stated.

She said the NIS has deployed more officers to borders both land and airports to ensure to ensure tighter control of entry and exit points. Additionally, the agency has heightened surveillance to prevent any foreign intervention in the country.

The Department of State Services (DSS) is also involved in the crackdown, with spokesperson Peter Afunanya revealing that they have identified certain protest sponsors and are investigating their financial transactions.

He said several accounts linked to the suspected sponsors have already been frozen.

The #EndBadGovernance protests have been gaining traction since it started on 1st August in response to issues such as insecurity, economic hardship, and poor governance in the country.
