…Army authorities compensate family with N300,000
A soldier’s warning shot fired to disperse a mob of protesters in Samaru, Zaria, resulted in the death of 16-year-old Ismail Mohammed on Tuesday, the Nigerian Army has confirmed.
The incident happened on the sixth day of the #EndBadGovernance protests that have rocked major Nigerian cities since Thursday, 1st August.
The Kaduna State Government imposed a 24-hour curfew in Zaria and Kaduna, the capital city, on Monday in response to violent protests. The following day, residents defied the curfew and took to the streets in demonstrations.
According to a statement by the Nigerian Army, troops responded to a distress call about hoodlums gathering and burning tyres, and pelting stones at security personnel.
Upon arrival, the hoodlums attempted to attack the troops, prompting a soldier to fire a warning shot, which led to the teenager’s death.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, has expressed sadness over the “unfortunate” incident and sent a delegation to sympathise with the deceased’s family.
In a gesture of goodwill and compensation, the military has presented the family of the deceased with N300,000. Mohammed has been buried according to Islamic rites, with senior military officers in attendance.
The soldier involved has been arrested and is undergoing interrogation as the Nigerian Army has promised a thorough investigation into the matter.
