…CUPP spokesperson warns of growing threat to democracy, urges Tinubu to take action

An explosion unfolded at the Action Peoples Party, APP, secretariat in Rivers State early Monday at 1:00 a.m.

The incident prompted a swift response from the Rivers State Police Command.

According to the Police Command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, a bomb disposal team was immediately deployed to the scene to investigate the cause of the blast.

“I cannot say if it was a bomb explosion yet. We have commenced an investigation,” Iringe-Koko said, “The damage wasn’t that much.”

Meanwhile, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, spokesperson for the Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, has condemned the attack, describing it as the handiwork of political extremists and terrorists bent on destabilising the State ahead of the forthcoming local government election.

He stressed that the APP’s rising popularity in Rivers State made it a target for those seeking to undermine democracy.

“Political extremists and terrorists who are desperate to make Rivers State ungovernable bombed the party headquarters, which was just renovated ahead of the Rivers LGA election, in which the APP is tipped to win by a landslide as the party of popular choice in Rivers State,” the House of Representatives member stated.

Ugochinyere noted that this was the third reported incident of bombing allegedly carried out by “those who claim to be working for the ruling government”, and called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

He urged President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action to address the growing threat of political violence, warning that “they will bomb down this democracy. Stop these men now before it’s too late”.

“Mr President, you have to take a hard decision, as silence will mean that their devilish action is acceptable,” he added.

“Act now, Mr President, as the history of your action or inaction will be recorded for you, and this growing criminal terrorism action can spiral into other hands and cause bigger harm to our democracy.”
