After seven months of the retirement of the charismatic Bishop of Enugu Anglican Diocese and Archbishop of Enugu Province, Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Chukwuma, the Church of Nigeria has elected a professor of cardiology at the University of Nigeria, Venerable Sam Ike as his replacement.
Venerable Ike who is also a consultant physician and cardiologist at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku-Ozalla was one of the seven members of clergy elected as Bishops to fill the vacant Episcopal Sees in seven of the Dioceses of the Church of Nigeria.
He is married to Ruby and their union is blessed with three children.
According to a press statement released by the Communication Officer of the Church of Nigeria, Korede Akintunde, this morning, four Archbishops were also elected for four internal provinces of the church.
The statement explained that the election of the Bishops and Archbishops were conducted during the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Episcopal Synod held yesterday at St Matthew’s Anglican Church Maitama, in Abuja.
Other Bishops elected during the synod include Ven. Ephraim Gongdem for Jos Diocese; Ven Dr John Obinali for 2. Okigwe Diocese; Ven. Dr. Godwin Odubena for Ijebu North Diocese; Ven. Bernard Hanson for Ahoada Diocese; Ven Titus Alkali for Wusasa Diocese and Ven Samuel Ifeyemi for Osun North Diocese.
Rt. Rev’d Sosthenes Eze, Bishop of Enugu North Diocese was elected the Archbishop of Enugu Province; Most Rev’d Israel Afolabi Amao who is the Bishop of New Bussa Diocese was elected the Archbishop of Kwara Province; Rt Rev’d Dr Williams Oluwarotimi Aladekugbe, the Bishop of Ibadan North Diocese was elected the Archbishop of Ibadan Province while Most Rev’d Daniel Yisa, the Bishop of Minna Diocese was elected the Archbishop of Lokoja Province.
The Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Most Rev. Dr. Henry Ndukuba at the end of the Episcopal Synod congratulated the newly elected Bishops and Archbishops, prayed that God will grant them wisdom, strength and good health to pilot the affairs of the people of God in their respective Dioceses and Provinces.
Primate Ndukuba also called on all members of the Church to pray and support the newly elected Bishops and their families, as they go into their new places of assignments after the due processes, training and consecration.
The Primate also announced that the Consecration of the Bishops-elect and the presentation Archbishops-elect will hold on Wednesday 18th of September 2024 during the Standing Committee Meeting of the Church that will be hosted by Nike Diocese in Enugu State.
