The Anambra State Herbal Practice Bill 2024, sponsored by Hon. Tony Muobike, was on Tuesday read for the second time and moved to the committee stage.

Anambra State Herbal Practice Bill 2024, is a private member bill sponsored by Hon. Tony Muobike, the House of Assembly member representing Aguata II constituency and the House of Assembly Committee Chairman on Health. In a motion by Hon. Muobike for the second reading of the bill, seconded by Hon. Emma Nwafor, Hon. Tony Muobike said that a law to regulate herbal practices in Anambra State is long overdue. Accordingly, he said, the bill aims to “regulate and sanitize the herbal practice in Anambra State”. Speaking further, he also argued that “no law regulates and monitors herbal practice today, yet, it is an integral part of medicine in Anambra State. But there is no code of conduct or regulation. Where there is no legal framework to regulate the practice, the government’s hands are tied. The consequence is that our people are made to pay heavily”, Hon. Tony Muobike argued.

During the House debate on the bill, it was overwhelmingly supported by honourable members who spoke emphatically on its importance. Hon. Ejike Okechukwu, ,Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme, Hon. Golden Ilo, Hon. Noble Igwe, and Hon. Jude Akpua, all spoke highly of the bill and supported its speedy passage into law.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Somto Udeze, then referred the bill to the Committees on Judiciary and Health, requesting that they turn in their report in two weeks.
