The WhatsApp number of Akwa-Ibom State, Governor Umo Eno has been hacked by fraudsters who asked for money from his contacts.
Many of Mr Eno’s phone contacts have received messages from his WhatsApp number on Tuesday asking them to transfer a specified amount of money to an account and promising reimbursement later.
While alerting the public in a statement on Wednesday, the Press Secretary to the Governor Ekerete Udon said law enforcement agents are on the trail of the perpetrators of this ignoble act.
“The state government’s attention has been drawn to carefully-orchestrated fraudulent posts on some social media platforms, where some criminal elements have cloned the WhatsApp number of the Governor of Akwa Ibom State with intent to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.
“We hereby warn that any message appearing to solicit funds by these imposters should be totally discountenanced by the general public as they do not emanate from the Governor,” the statement said.
A Cybersecurity analyst, Bilal Abdullahi recently said governors should add additional security to their numbers and WhatsApp to avoid issues of this nature.
“WhatsApp enables additional security layers whereby one can link the app to his email for authorization before use and also there‘s what we call App Lock whereby one can lock the application and can only use it if he inserts a pin or passcode,” he said.
