Following the invitation of the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC, comrade Joe Ajaero by the Nigeria Police Force over allegations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, and other related offenses, the labour union has threatened a national strike if the NLC president is detained or arrested by the police.
The decision was made after an emergency meeting of the NLC’s National Executive Council, held in Abuja with some executives participating virtually.
The meeting began at 8:30 a.m., and it was agreed that Ajaero should comply with the police’s request for an interview.
Recall that the invitation was contained in a letter, signed by ACP Adamu Muazu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team.
The letter reads: “This office is investigating a case of Criminal Conspiracy, Terrorism Financing, Treasonable Felony, Subversion, and Cybercrime in which you have been implicated.
“You are therefore required to report to the undersigned for an interview on Tuesday, 20th August 2024, at 10:00 hrs prompt, at Old Abattoir by Guzape Junction, Abuja, through the Team Leader on telephone no 08035179870, in connection with the above investigation.
“Be informed that if you fail to honour this letter, this office will have no choice but to issue a warrant for your arrest.”
The strained relationship between the force and the labour began on July 7, when security forces conducted a night-time raid on the NLC national secretariat in Abuja.
According to the NLC spokesperson, Benson Upah, the operatives entered the building around 8:30 p.m., arresting the security guards and forcing them to surrender keys to offices on the second floor.
“The security operatives, some from the Nigeria Police Force, some wearing black tee-shirts, presumably from the Department of State Services, and others on outright mufti, swooped on the 10th Floor of the NLC and arrested the security operative on duty and then commandeered him to the second floor where he was asked to produce the keys to the offices,” Upah said.
