NewsNigeriaPoliticsSupreme Court Affirms Victory Of Ododo, Diri

The Supreme Court has affirmed the victory of Ahmed Usman Ododo and Douye Diri as the duly elected governors of Kogi and Bayelsa States.

This was disclosed on Friday at the ongoing final hearing of the governorship election cases by a five-man panel presided over by Justice Garba Lawal.

Ododo’s victory was challenged by Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) governorship candidate for Kogi State, Murtala Ajaka at the Tribunal.

Though the Tribunal ruled in favour of the APC candidate, Ajaka still went to the Court of Appeal where he was again defeated by Ododo.

Also, the five-member panel presided over by Justice Garba Lawal at the final hearing of the 2023 governorship election reaffirmed Douye Diri’s victory over APC’ candidate, Timipre Sylva.

While reacting to the court’s verdict, Diri had taken to his X handle to appreciate his Deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo and his supporters for their solidarity and encouragement.

“On behalf of my workaholic Deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, and I, we thank God for today’s victory at the Supreme Court over our re-election.

“Big shout out to our supporters and good people of Bayelsa State for the mandate freely given us which has just been reaffirmed by this massive judgment.

“We appreciate the Justices for standing on the side of truth. We commend the electoral body, INEC for defending its declared results of the November 11, 2023 governorship election while the case lasted from the Tribunal, to the Court of Appeal and finally at the Supreme Court.” He wrote.

Meanwhile, the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to His Excellency Ahmed Usman Ododo on the Supreme Court judgment today, affirming his victory in the November 11, 2023, Kogi State governorship election.

According to PGF, the Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss the appeal by Muri Ajaka of the SDP as a “fruitless endeavor and punching of the air” is a significant milestone for democracy and the rule of law, not just in Kogi State, but across Nigeria.

“Governor Ododo’s victory is more than a legal triumph; it’s a resounding testament to the unwavering love and trust the people of Kogi State—the Kogites—have for him and the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a political party. This ruling underscores the electorate’s confidence in Governor Ododo’s ability to lead and deliver on his promises of development, security, and prosperity for all.

“Since taking over the helm, Governor Ododo has demonstrated exemplary leadership qualities. His administration has been marked by a commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance. Under his leadership, Kogi State has witnessed significant strides in infrastructure development, economic growth, and social cohesion. His dedication to the welfare of the people and his vision for a brighter future have earned him widespread acclaim and support, solidifying his position as a leader deeply connected to the aspirations and needs of his constituents.

“The PGF views this judicial affirmation as a victory for all who cherish democracy and good governance. It reinforces the need for the Progressive Family to remain steadfast in championing the ethos of democracy, development, and unity, despite the diverse political opposition. The Supreme Court’s ruling should embolden all members of the APC and supporters of Governor Ododo to continue working towards the collective goal of advancing Nigeria’s democratic values and promoting sustainable development.

“As we celebrate this momentous occasion, the PGF reiterates its commitment to supporting Governor Ododo in his quest to transform Kogi State into a beacon of hope and progress. His victory is not just a win for Kogi State but a triumph for all Nigerians who believe in the power of democracy and the rule of law. Congratulations, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, on this well-deserved victory. May your tenure be marked by continued success and transformative leadership,” PGF stated.
