Governor Soludo’s supported faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance – APGA, which is not recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission – INEC, has stepped up its onslaught against Chief Edozie Njoku’s led APGA on Tuesday, following the sealing of the State office of the party in Awka. The Njoku-led APGA State office located at no 8, road 1, Udoka Housing Estate in Awka, was sealed by the Anambra State Housing Development Corporation, on the claims that the office is located in a residential area. This action has been widely regarded as a clear act of political oppression and intimidation by the government in power.

To date, Chief Edozie Njoku remains the National Chairman of APGA and all party officers under him are the recognized and legitimate party officers for APGA across different levels of party leadership. However, Governor Soludo has refused to give any recognition to them. Today’s event might symbolize a shift in Governor Soludo’s approach to the leadership issue in APGA and also gives a hint that reconciliation might not be in sight any time soon.
Not surprisingly, the location of the APGA state office also has so many political party offices including that of the Labour Party – LP and Young Progressive Party – YPP, among many others. Further inside the Udoka Estate are more offices and businesses, which were also not sealed. However, when a video of the sealing was shared on social media, the group that sealed the APGA office in an attempt to save face returned and sealed the LP’s office that is next to the APGA’s office, which was first sealed.
Reacting to this development, the National Vice Chairman of APGA, Comrade Tony Uche Ezekwelu, who was in the party office at the time of the incident, wondered why the government suddenly came to seal an office without any prior notice. He also wondered why the team came with such an intimidating number of armed policemen and army. According to Hon. Tony Uche, “If there is an infraction, there is a process…the authorities will start by writing a letter and not come just today and without any prior notice seal up the office. They came here with truckloads of armed police and army officers to intimidate and possibly manhandle innocent people.” Mr. Ezekwelu, who alleged that the government might be trying to save face with this action, given the number of party members coming to buy forms for the upcoming LG election, observed that acceptance of the Njoku’s led APGA might have made them feel threatened. “People have been coming here to obtain the form, maybe some people in government now feel threatened and then resort to intimidation and impunity”, Tony said.
Speaking further during a press briefing in front of the sealed office, Hon. Tony Uche said that Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, ought not to allow such impunity to take any foothold in the state. Describing the incident as “unfortunate, and abhorrent,” Tony said the action is condemnable and called on the governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, to “direct his subordinates aright.” However, Mr. Tony maintained that APGA is law-abiding and will maintain course in exploring all legal options available in seeking redress. “We are peaceful and law-abiding. We have contacted the property owner and we have briefed our lawyer. We are going to use every legal means to ensure that the right thing is done. Nobody can intimidate us,” Tony Uche Ezekwelu reiterated.
