…Ajaero Regains Freedom
The Trade Union Congress, TUC, of the United Kingdom has condemned the Nigerian government over the arrest and detention of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero, on Monday.
The UK TUC has called for an immediate end to the government’s clampdown on labour leaders in Nigeria.
Pilot News had earlier on Monday reported that Ajaero was arrested by the Department of State Services at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja while on his way to attend a TUC conference in the UK.
The NLC, in a statement, accused the DSS of arresting Ajaero without any legal warrant, describing the action as a “brazen act of lawlessness and intimidation.”
Ajaero, however, regained his freedom in the early hours of Tuesday after being detained for several hours. The NLC announced Ajaero’s release at exactly 2:18 a.m. in a social media post.
Despite his release, UK labour leaders maintain that the issue remains unresolved, describing the arrest as a violation of Ajaero’s fundamental rights.
Speaking at the event in the UK, a TUC leader said, “Joe was released last night, but it is clear that his ordeal is not yet over. His unlawful arrest is a gross violation of fundamental trade union freedoms, especially as he was on his way to speak to us about the vital right of trade unions to seek solidarity.”
The TUC leader reiterated their support for Nigerian unions and expressed concern about the state of labour relations in Nigeria.
He added, “Nigeria’s trade unions still have our solidarity. We condemn the actions of the Nigerian government and demand that they cease their persecution of Joe Ajaero.”
