The United Nations Children Fund, UNICEF, has called for collaboration with the Sokoto state government to improve birth registration and nutrition in the state.
Ms Cristian Munduate, Nigeria Country Representative of UNICEF made the call during a visit to the wife of State Governor, Hajiya Fatima Aliyu, explained that the state has over 1.5 million children under five years who have not been registered.
Ms Cristian noted that issuing a certificate after delivery would give the child the right to have an official name and help households to have better access to social services.
Responding, Hajiya Fatima Aliyu expressed appreciation for the contributions of UNICEF in the primary healthcare sector of the state, saying the Special Baby care Unit will mark a significant achievement in improving maternal and newborn healthcare services in the State.
The UNICEF country representative also inaugurated a Special Baby Care Unit which was renovated and equipped with state of the art incubators for new born babies in the state.
