First Lady Oluremi Tinubu unveiled the winning fabric of the #OneNigeria Unity Fabric competition on Monday at the State House in Abuja.
She awarded N25 million to the designer, Bamidele Mofiyinfoluwa.
Mrs Tinubu explained that the project aims to foster creativity, enhance national unity, and support local enterprises to boost the economy.
She announced that the winning fabric would be used officially on 1st October for Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations.
“Our goal is to encourage local mass production of the unity fabric by two of our local manufacturers, making it accessible to all Nigerians,” Mrs Tinubu said.
“By mass-producing this fabric, we aim to stimulate local industries, create jobs, and boost our economy. We envision this fabric will be used in national celebrations, events, and daily life, symbolising unity, love, and pride of our nation.”
The First Lady noted that the idea for the unity fabric was inspired by her visit to Zimbabwe in 2023, where she saw a similar national fabric concept.
“This fabric represents our nation’s unity and was inspired by my visit to Zimbabwe in 2023, where I saw a similar initiative,” she said. “I introduced the idea to the Renewed Hope Initiative, and it has become a reality through the creativity of young Nigerians.”
According to her, the #OneNigeriaUnityFabric competition, announced in February, called for designs from youths aged 15 to 25.
Out of 111 entries from across Nigeria and the Diaspora, Mofiyinfoluwa’s design was picked by expert judges.
“Miss Bamidele Mofiyinfoluwa’s design embodies our diverse culture and will be proudly worn on Independence Day and other national celebrations,” said Mrs Tinubu.
Mofiyinfoluwa said she was “overwhelmed” by her win and considered it a “great honour”.
She thanked Mrs Tinubu for the competition and promised to use the prize to advance her textile business and promote unity among Nigerian youths.
