NewsNigeriaPoliticsNigeria Reiterates Call for Africa’s Permanent Seat on UN Security Council

Nigeria has once again made a strong case for Africa’s permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council.

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, made this call during his address at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, UNGA, in New York on Sunday.

Badaru highlighted Nigeria’s significant contributions to global peacekeeping, stating that the country has participated in 41 peacekeeping missions worldwide and deployed over 200,000 troops in various United Nations operations.

He emphasised, “Nigeria continues to call for the reform of the United Nations Security Council to give just representation to Africa permanently for inclusivity and deepening of global peace and security.”

Nigeria’s push for permanent seats comes against the backdrop of Africa’s long-standing demand for better representation in the Security Council, a body considered the most powerful within the UN. Currently, Africa holds only three rotational seats out of the 15-member council.

Badaru also underscored Nigeria’s key role in regional stability, particularly in West Africa and the Sahel, while urging the international community to intensify efforts to combat emerging security threats such as illegal arms trafficking and organised crime.

“The time for action is now, as Nigeria grapples with the complexities of organised crime that threaten regional stability,” he said.
