The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review is set to engage key stakeholders, like the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Nigeria Guild of Editors, Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures, chairmen of the 18 political parties, and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the ongoing process to amend the 1999 Constitution.
Hon. Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the committee, stated this on Tuesday during the committee’s meeting in Abuja.
According to him, the committee is set to hold an international legislative dialogue on women’s participation in politics on October 28, and will commence zonal public hearings in January 2025.
Kalu noted that the committee is committed to delivering a new Constitution by December 2025, pointing out that the planned engagements are aimed at gathering input from critical stakeholders and briefing them on the progress of the constitutional review.
“We’ll be engaging the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, the Nigeria Guild of Editors, chairmen of the 18 political parties, local government chairmen, and CSOs in this national exercise. It’s crucial to secure their buy-in and perspectives as we move forward with this important task,” Kalu stated.
He outlined the key thematic areas of the constitutional review, which include local government matters, judiciary, electoral issues, security, and the devolution of powers.
The committee has constituted sub-committees for each of these thematic areas. The Local Government Matters sub-committee comprises Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, Obinna Ginger, Aliyu Boya, and Clement Jimbo, while the Judiciary sub-committee is made up of Hon. Bello Kumo, Victor Oghene, Manu Soro, Babajimi Benson, and Gbefwi Gaza.
Additionally, the Electoral sub-committee includes Hon. Ali Ibrahim, Mukhtar Betara, Olumide Osoba, Oluwole Oke, and Abiodun Faleke.
The Security sub-committee features members such as Isah Ali, Julius Pondi, Chinedu Ogah, Peter Akpatason, Bob Solomon, and Iduma Igariwey.
Kalu also assured Nigerians that actionable recommendations from the upcoming women’s summit will be incorporated into the constitutional amendment process.
He stressed that the summit will provide a platform to amplify the voices of women and promote their involvement in the nation’s political development.
The constitutional review process is expected to address a wide range of issues critical to the future of Nigeria’s governance structure.
