Former Governor of Benue State and lawmaker representing Benue North-East at the Red Chamber of the National Assembly, Senator Gabriel Suswam has said that the calls for the acting national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum to step aside are necessitated by his abysmal performance.
The PDP chieftain disclosed this on Thursday on Arise TV, stressing that Damagum’s leadership style has caused the crisis in the party to deepen.
He said, “Damagum’s performance has been abysmal as far as the members of PDP are concerned. It’s not just because the position by the constitution of the party should return to the North-Central. If the leadership of the PDP was performing very well I don’t think that the agitation for the position to return to the North-Central would have been as loud as it is now.
“His performance has been very abysmal to say the least, a lot of people are tired. It’s not just people within the North-Central that are seeking somebody who can provide leadership to the party. They want somebody from the North-Central where the position rightly belongs to take over. It’s not just about people from the North-Central wanting one of them to be national chairman, it’s because of the abysmal performance of the leadership of the party. If you meet any PDP member from any part of the country he’ll tell you that the leadership of the party at the headquarters is not encouraging.
“Most of the problems that we’re now going through, the crisis in the party wouldn’t have lingered if we have a leadership that shows some level of integrity. So, it’s about performance. It’s about the fact that we don’t have leadership. It shows that we don’t have the capacity to put PDP where it belongs, as a vibrant opposition party, Nigerians will say, if the ruling party is not performing at least we have an alternative. So it’s more of the performance that has agitated the minds of the people. It’s not about me or any person from the North-Central wanting to be the national chairman of the party.
“People don’t trust this acting chairman. People don’t believe whatever he says because he says this tomorrow and another time he says something else” Suswam added.
