Nigeria has been classified among eleven African countries that have experienced worsening governance levels over the last decade, as highlighted in the “2024 Ibrahim Index of African Governance,” published by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.
The report reveals that Nigeria has dropped three places from 30th to 33rd on the continent.
According to the findings, 33 countries in Africa have improved their overall governance during the past ten years, while 21 countries, including Nigeria, have seen their governance levels decline in 2023 compared to 2014.
The nations experiencing the most significant governance deterioration also include Sudan, Senegal, Tunisia, Uganda, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Eswatini, Guinea, Mauritius, and Mozambique.
The report states, “Over the decade, 33 countries, hosting just over half (52.1 per cent) of the continent’s population, have made progress in overall governance. But for the remaining 21 countries, hosting 47.9 per cent of the population, the overall governance level is worse in 2023 than in 2014.”
The document further reveals that nearly half of Africa’s population resides in countries where governance has declined over the past decade. This decline is exacerbated by deteriorating security conditions, coups in West Africa, and conflicts, notably in Sudan.
Specifically, Nigeria has experienced declines in 10 out of 16 sub-categories, with the most significant drop occurring in the ‘Security and Safety’ category, which fell by 11 points.
This decline places Nigeria among the ten countries with the worst governance outcomes over the past decade and in the bottom five for 2023.
The report notes that the ‘Absence of Armed Conflict’ in Nigeria saw a steep decline of 49.8 points, ranking it as the fifth most declined country in this category and positioning it at 54th overall in 2023.
