…President Tinubu Extends Condolences
Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, has died at the age of 56 following a prolonged illness.
He passed on Tuesday night, according to an official statement issued by the State House and signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to Onanuga, “Lt. General Lagbaja passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos after a period of illness.”
He further extended his “heartfelt condolences to the family and the Nigerian Armed Forces during this difficult time,” honouring the late General’s significant contributions to the nation’s military.
Lt. General Lagbaja’s military career spanned over three decades, beginning with his enrolment in the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987.
He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps on September 19, 1992, following his completion of the Academy’s 39th Regular Course. Throughout his career, he held several critical positions, including serving as a platoon commander in both the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion.
A respected figure in the Nigerian Army, Lt. General Lagbaja played prominent roles in key military operations aimed at bolstering national security.
His contributions included his involvement in Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in the Southeast, and Operation Forest Sanity in Kaduna and Niger States. These assignments underscored his commitment to safeguarding Nigeria and addressing security challenges across various regions.
In recognition of his dedication to professional excellence, Lt. General Lagbaja pursued advanced military education, graduating from the U.S. Army War College, where he earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies. His educational achievements highlighted his commitment to personal and professional growth, as well as his pursuit of excellence in military leadership.
Lt. General Lagbaja’s appointment as Chief of Army Staff by President Tinubu on June 19, 2023, was viewed as a testament to his competence and dedication.
However, recent months saw speculation surrounding his health. On 20 October, the Nigerian Army dismissed rumours of his death, clarifying that he was receiving medical treatment abroad.
Subsequently, on October 30, President Tinubu appointed Major General Olufemi Oluyede as the Acting Chief of Army Staff.
Oluyede was officially decorated with the new rank of lieutenant-general on 5 November.
President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the loss. He conveyed his wishes for “eternal peace” for Lt. General Lagbaja, commemorating his service and sacrifices for Nigeria.
Born on 28 February 1968, Lt. General Lagbaja is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children.
