The Deputy Speaker of Nigerian Children’s Parliament-Enugu Chapter, Miss Nneoma Ndu has appealed to Enugu State lawmakers to support passage of the children based violence education bill into law.

Speaking at the Joint Assembly sitting between Nigerian Children’s Parliament-Enugu Chapter and Enugu State House of Assembly on Tuesday at the Hallowed Chambers, Enugu State House of Assembly Complex, Deputy Speaker Ndu said the bill when passed into law will equip children with knowledge, address violence and foster a safer and just society for all.

Meanwhile Dr. Olusoji Akanley, Chief of Field Office, AI, UNICEF who accompanied the children parliament has called on stakeholders to uphold children’s rights as it is the compass to realizing the desired future.

The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF representative made this call as he addressed the Enugu State House of Assembly members during the joint meeting with the Children Parliament, an event organized as a lineup to the annual event of World Children’s Day; World Children’s Day is commemorated on 20th of November annually.

“2024 is significant, as it marks 35 years since the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.”

“Since 2017, WCD has stood as UNICEF’s global call to action for children, by children. Marked on 20 November, it commemorates the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in 1989, highlighting crucial issues affecting children & young people, and fostering their engagement as advocates for their rights.”

Dr. Olusoji revealing the WCD 2024 theme “Listen to the future” encourages children world-wide to think about their future even as adults endeavor to awaken the consciousness of these young ones’ choices that will deliver the kind of future they want to see by year 2050.

Highlighting the key asks, UNICEF Chief said the young ones voices must be amplified, child rights globally and carefully communicated and key stakeholders engaged to promote and protect these rights.

“To increase global awareness of child rights through an integrated communications and advocacy campaign on the importance of child rights and the role that UNICEF plays in promoting and protecting them.”

“To mobilize support for child rights by engaging a diverse range of stakeholders, including governments, civil society organizations, corporates, media, and the general public-most importantly children and young people themselves.”

“To amplify and empower the voices and actions of children and young people to elevate their perspectives on issues and recognize them as change-makers for child rights.”

“To foster collaboration and partnerships with key stakeholders to amplify key messages and achieve a greater impact in promoting and protecting child rights,” the UNICEF chief said.
