A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama on Thursday granted former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello a fresh ₦500 million bail with three sureties in like sum.
Justice Maryanne Anenih issued the ruling following a fresh bail application filed by Bello’s counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN).
Bello and Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu are facing a 16-count charge brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges include criminal breach of trust involving ₦110.4 billion.
At the court session, Daudu withdrew a further affidavit filed earlier by Bello, explaining that he did not intend to create contention. The prosecution, represented by Olukayode Enitan (SAN), did not oppose the withdrawal, which the court granted.
Daudu subsequently urged the court to grant Bello bail and broaden the properties allowed as bail sureties to include locations across the FCT. Enitan confirmed discussions with the defence to expedite the trial and assured cooperation.
Ruling on the application, Justice Anenih held that the offence was bailable and granted Bello bail under stringent conditions, including surrendering his passport.
Bello remains in Kuje Prison until he meets the conditions.
The case was adjourned to January 19 for trial.
