Chief Akai Egwuonwu, an aspirant for Anambra South senatorial by-election on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has said that one of the major attractions to his aspiration is that he is homegrown.
Responding to an interview question as to why many media influencers are favourbly disposed to his desire to replace Late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, Chief Akai said that one of the reasons is that he is indigenous. “Considering that I am an indigenous candidate, rather than someone just coming, I guess that endures media influencers to my campaign,” Chief Egwuonwu said. Akai more popularly known as Anambra Rice, is a life patron of APGA, a businessman and industrialist with businesses across different parts of the state.
After Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s funeral in November, four political parties in Anambra State have intensified their bid for his replacement.
In the APC, Chief Dozie Ikedife, an ally of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, has intensified the campaign for the ticket of the party. The PDP has Mr. Sam Ben Nwosu, and Barr. Onwa Nwafor-Orizu. The Labour Party has Barr. Donald Amamgbo and Emeka Alagwu. For APGA, Chief Akai Egwuonwu, a close friend of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, Chief Ebuka Onunkwo, Hon. Pascal Agbodike, and Mr. Patrick Ubajaka, Dr. Jude Emechata, in that order, are in the race for the party’s ticket. So far, based on prevailing realities, Senator Ubah’s replacement would emerge from the names above.
In terms of real competitive advantage for political parties, the APC and APGA are better positioned to compete for the position and the election is expected to be conducted in January of 2025.
