The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued a one-day-old baby abandoned in a bush and arrested the mother, Khadija Ali, who allegedly dumped the child after being deserted by her husband.
In a statement released on Sunday, the FCT Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, disclosed that the baby was found near Crush Rock, behind the uncompleted Red Bricks Market, Mpape.
She said, “The FCT Police Command informs the public of the recovery of a day-old baby abandoned along a bush path near Crush Rock, Mpape.”
According to the statement, officers from the Mpape Division’s Juvenile and Women Care Section responded to a distress call around 10 a.m. on Friday. They discovered the baby wrapped in cloth and immediately took the infant to Mpape Primary Health Care Centre for medical evaluation.
“The child was promptly rescued and taken to Mpape Primary Health Care Centre, where medical evaluation confirmed the baby is in a stable condition,” Adeh said.
Following a tip-off from the community, the mother was apprehended. During interrogation, she confessed to abandoning the baby due to her inability to care for the child after her husband’s abandonment.
The police stated that the baby would be handed over to the Department of Social Welfare for proper care, while the mother would face prosecution under sections 14 and 16 of the Child Rights Act (CRA) 2003 upon completion of investigations.
The command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding vulnerable members of society and thanked the public for their cooperation. It urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.
