The Nigerian Army Women’s Command made history on Friday, 3 January 2025, as Hajara Egbunu became the first female soldier from the Infantry Corps to achieve the rank of Army Warrant Officer.

Brigadier General Mathias Amatso, Commander of the Nigerian Army Women Command, decorated Egbunu with her new rank at a ceremony held in the Command Conference Room in Abuja.

Speaking at the event, Brigadier General Amatso commended Egbunu for her “exceptional professionalism, dedication, and effectiveness,” according to Lieutenant Maureen Ogbuka, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations.

He described her promotion as a reflection of hard work and urged her to continue setting an example by upholding discipline and inspiring younger soldiers.

In her acceptance speech, Egbunu thanked God and the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General O.O. Oluyede, for his leadership and support. She also thanked Brigadier General Amatso for his guidance, which she said was instrumental in her success as the Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) of the Command.

The Nigerian Army celebrated the achievement in a statement, calling it a “significant step forward for gender inclusion.”
