The members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have impeached the speaker, Mudashiru Obasa on Monday, accusing him of multiple statutory and financial infractions.
Obasa was subsequently replaced by his deputy Mojisola Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1, and was also a former chief whip of the house.
The Speaker has been engulfed in a series of controversial circumstances in terms of financial dealings, with petitions already with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
His removal comes barely a month after he was accused of allegedly spending N17 billion to fix a gate that leads to the Assembly.
Meanwhile, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who wants to remain anonymous has noted that Obasa has so many previous corruption allegations against him, stressing that his sack is in the best interest of the party and the state.
It will be recalled that a petition was filed by the Progressive Youth Movement of Ikeja, Lagos State accusing Obasa of using proxy companies to embezzle funds from the Lagos House of Assembly and violating due process and procurement regulations.
Subsequently the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was petitioned to investigate him over allegations of financial misconduct, breach of public trust, and abuse of office.
The petition, dated December 17 2024 stated that the Finance Management Committee has not met officially since the 10th Assembly was inaugurated, allowing Obasa to make unauthorised financial decisions.
The APC chieftain told our reporter that his removal is in the best interest of the state because the numerous corruption allegations against the speaker have become an embarrassment to the state and the ruling party.
He commended the lawmakers for summoning the courage to sack Obasa, stressing that the action will serve as a deterrent to others.
