Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has firmly refuted reports claiming that the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, was sacked from his position as Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council (TRC). Speaking during the inauguration of “Operation Udo Ga Chi,” a new state security initiative, Governor Soludo emphasized that Igwe Achebe’s tenure simply expired after over eight years in office.
Soludo explained that the appointment of Igwe Chidubem Iweka, the traditional ruler of Obosi, as the new TRC chairman followed due process and was based on zoning arrangements previously agreed upon by the council. “I personally met with the Agbogidi, the Obi of Onitsha, and we had a cordial discussion about the transition and the need for equitable representation,” Soludo said.
He further clarified that the TRC is being expanded to include more traditional rulers across the state, stating, “Previously, only about thirty-something traditional rulers were official TRC members. We’re working towards broader inclusion moving forward.”
Governor Soludo reaffirmed his deep respect for the Obi of Onitsha and highlighted Achebe’s invaluable contributions during his tenure. “This transition is not about politics or personal grievances—it is a constitutional leadership rotation in line with our collective understanding,” he added.
