Nurses and midwives in Katsina State have threatened to withdraw their services from hospitals in security-prone areas following the continuous killings and abductions of their members.

The health workers, under the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), issued the warning during a press conference on Tuesday.

They gave the state government until midnight on Thursday, 30th January, to meet their demands or risk the withdrawal of services in affected areas.

The Katsina State Chairman of NANNM, Nurse Nura Mu’azu, identified the high-risk council areas to include Batsari, Danmusa, Kankara, Jibia, Dutsinma, Musawa, Malumfashi, Funtua, and Batagrawa.

He lamented that members had lost their lives, been maimed, or abducted while working in these locations.

He cited a recent incident where Nurse Yusuf Mairuwa and other health workers were abducted on Tuesday, 15th January, at the General Hospital in Kankara.

“The kidnappers demanded hundreds of millions in ransom. Such incidents have heightened fear among health workers providing services in these frontline councils,” Mu’azu said.

According to Mu’azu, the association had written to the state government, demanding improved security for hospitals and healthcare centres in these areas. However, he noted that nothing significant had been done.

Although the state government is making progress in tackling insecurity, more needs to be done to protect hospitals and healthcare workers from attacks by hoodlums, he stressed.

The association outlined its demands, including the immediate provision of robust 24/7 security in all hospitals within the affected areas.

They also called for the release of Nurse Mairuwa and others abducted while on duty, immediate compensation for affected members, and better remuneration to attract more health workers.
