Towering young filmmaker Benneth Nwankwo has said that making Class of Secrets season 2, makes him happy still, notwithstanding that the movie had not attracted viewership to the tune, as expected on YouTube, given the numbers generated by season 1 of the movie. This film’s first season was a huge success, amassing hundreds of thousands of views on various social channels including YouTube, announced Nwankwo’s excellent movie-making credentials to the world. Despite this disappointment, Ben is not disturbed. Perhaps, for a focused moviemaker, it takes more than failing to hit the numbers, to make Benneth Nwankwo regret making a movie.
“Class of Secrets 2”, a Nigerian High school crime drama web series that was released in February 2024, introduced a new vibe into the Nigerian High School movie series. The first episode of the 9-episode web series is currently a little over 80,000 views on YouTube and it is now 1 year since it was released. Considering that the first season has amassed over 400,000 views, the gap in numbers is too loud to be ignored and can easily daunt a creative given that numbers are everything in today’s world of the creative.
Undeterred, in a recent reaction to the viewership disparity, Benneth Nwankwo shrugged it off; “things don’t always work out the way you anticipate,” he said in a Facebook post.
Ben, who gave the background upon which he went into the project, said that viewers wanted more of the movie and that was why he embarked on the project with his team. “After the release of the first season, a lot of people wanted more. We also felt the need to expand the story beyond Miss Lydia, Emerald, and Co. And we went for it, the rest is history,” he said.
However, Mr. Nwankwo also said that he is happy and unbothered. “At the end of the day, I’m still happy we made the second season, I’m happy we got the story out. And this result is not final, something can still bring traffic,” Ben enthused.
In August 2023, it was reported that Class of Secrets had been renewed for a second season, with additional cast members joining the show. By December, principal photography began in Awka, Anambra State, Nigeria, and new cast members joined. Precious “Dhoove” Ofozoba from “Boy Meets Girl” and Janefrancess Chole from “Best Friends in the World” joined the cast for season 2.
The second season tells the story of a young female student who returned to Folkestone High School to uncover the truth behind her brother’s arrest as she suspects a conspiracy. While at it, an anonymous figure plays mind games with the students.
