…Dissolves Political Parties
General Abdourahamane Tiani, the military leader who seized power in Niger through a coup in 2023, has been sworn in as the country’s transitional president for the next five years.
At a ceremony held in Niamey on Wednesday, Tiani also formalised his promotion to the rank of army general, the highest in the country’s military hierarchy.
In a significant political shift, he signed a decree dissolving all political parties.
Mahamane Roufai, the secretary general of the government, described the transition as “flexible,” but the move directly challenges efforts by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to reintegrate Niger into the regional bloc and restore democratic governance.
After the coup, Tiani initially proposed a three-year transition to civilian rule, but ECOWAS rejected the plan and threatened military intervention.
With negotiations failing to yield a compromise, Niger, along with fellow coup-led nations Mali and Burkina Faso, exited ECOWAS, a decision that was made permanent earlier this year.
