Three communities, Agaza, Endo, and Agbagada in Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State have raised concerns over illegal mining activities that threatened peaceful existence in their areas.
Osu of Agwada, HRH Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Obagu, while speaking with newsmen, expressed concern over the unsafe mining practices, which have resulted in multiple fatalities.
The traditional ruler noted that illegal miners have begun invading the communities following alleged unauthorized operations by two Chinese-owned companies.
“These companies commenced illegal mining operations in June 2024 without the community’s consent or authorization. They are conducting these activities with the backing of unknown NSCDC officers,” he said.
Community youth leader Ode Eshimutu stated that deaths occur almost daily caused by the illegal miners.
“Since the company arrived, over 50 people have died due to unsafe pits. The traditional ruler has repeatedly complained to the state government, but the illegal activities persist. We demand that the government ensures proper mining regulations are enforced and that illegal companies are sanctioned,” Eshimutu said.
He called for licensed mining firms to collaborate with the community to ensure safety and economic benefits for residents.
A community member, Hauwa Haruna, said she lost her only son, who died when a poorly dug mining pit collapsed.
“I was at home when they brought his body. They told me the pit caved in, and it was too dangerous for anyone to rescue him,” said the 60-year-old widow, now left without a provider.
Another resident, Danjuma Dokudu, lamented that two of their sons who worked at the site were lured by meager wages.
“They continue working there despite the risks because they have no alternative jobs,” he said.
