The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the emergence of Comrade Professor Christopher Goson Piwuna as its new National President.
The development follows the expiration of the tenure of Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, who previously held the position.
Professor Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist and lecturer at the University of Jos, Plateau State, was declared the new president during the union’s National Delegates Conference held in the early hours of Monday.
His emergence comes at a crucial time when Nigeria’s public universities continue to grapple with issues ranging from poor funding and inadequate infrastructure to unpaid salaries and withheld entitlements of academic staff.
With a long history of active unionism, Professor Piwuna served as ASUU’s Vice President under the Osodeke-led administration and is well-regarded within the academic community for his commitment to the union’s struggles.
Members believe his leadership will consolidate on past efforts to reposition public university education in Nigeria.
The union, under his watch, is expected to continue pressing for the full implementation of agreements reached with the Federal Government, as well as demand respect for the autonomy of public universities.
The election was closely contested between Professor Christopher Piwuna and Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi State, with Professor Piwuna eventually emerging as the winner.
The ASUU presidency is widely considered one of the most influential platforms for advocating academic and labour rights in Nigeria.
Stakeholders within and outside the education sector will now look to Professor Piwuna’s leadership to steer the union through its next phase of negotiations and reforms.
