In a bid to simplify the tax language and foster voluntary compliance, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) held a training workshop on Friday for Heads of Communications from leading radio stations and communication organisations nationwide.

The session,  a one-day Strategic Tax Communication Session’ organised by Arabinrin Aderonke Bello, Technical Assistant, on Broadcast Media to the Executive Chairman of FIRS,  aimed to equip the Radio Stations with the skills and strategies needed for effective grassroots communication, with a special focus on tax-related issues.

Zack Adedeji, the Executive Chairman, in his remarks emphasised the critical role of effective communication in tax administration, describing communications heads as frontline ambassadors responsible for shaping narratives, clarifying policies, and fostering voluntary tax compliance.

Represented by Arabinrin Aderonke Bello, Technical Assistant, on Broadcast Media, the Executive Chairman highlighted the importance of breaking down tax related information in a consistent and accurate manner for easy understanding of persons from all cadres of social strata.

The FIRS boss underscored the significance of coordination and networking across regions to enhance tax administration efficiency.

“There must be consistency and accuracy in designing programmes for tax matters in order to build trust” he said.

Dr. Abdullahi Ismaila, Director of Press, who spoke on the topic on effective communication strategies for tax awareness, maintained that effective communication is crucial for educating taxpayers, addressing their concerns, and encouraging voluntary tax compliance, stressing that it helps build trust, promote tax literacy, and ensures taxpayers understand their obligations, rights, and benefits.

The Director of Press listed  some Strategies for enhancing tax awareness to include: ‘Simplify Tax Language: Use plain language to avoid confusion; Multi-channel Approach: Employ social media, websites, and traditional media to reach diverse taxpayers; Engage Taxpayers: Foster participation via public forums, town halls, and online platforms; and Provide Timely Updates: Inform taxpayers about law changes, deadlines, and initiatives promptly..

According to Ismaila, effective communication is vital for promoting tax awareness and voluntary compliance, adding that by adopting clear, transparent, and engaging communication strategies, tax authorities can build trust, educate taxpayers, reduce disputes, and support economic growth.

Also during the programme, Dr. Loveth Onanuga, Director, Taxpayer Service Department, FIRS, stressed that the department’s core mission is to foster a customer-centric approach by simplifying tax laws, educating taxpayers, and building a positive image of the FIRS, stressing that the vision is to empower taxpayers through exceptional service and transparent tax administration.

She stated that the Tax File programme serves as a vital communication channel between FIRS and taxpayers, providing updates and fostering engagement, adding it has become instrumental in connecting federal and non-governmental services with the Nigerian public.

She stressed that Media as a powerful tool beyond information dissemination, highlighting the media’s dual role as educator and influencer in shaping public perception and behavior towards taxation. She stressed that media professionals are narrators of the national tax story and must ensure clarity, accuracy, and consistency to build trust.
