In a significant political development, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its sole presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
This unanimous endorsement came during the APC National Summit held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, coinciding with the second anniversary of Tinubu’s presidency.
All 22 APC governors under the aegis of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) led the charge in affirming Tinubu’s candidacy, signalling a unified front within the party ahead of the next presidential race.
The endorsement motion was moved by Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, chairman of the PGF, and seconded by Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, the forum’s vice chairman.
Upon putting the motion to a voice vote, it was adopted unanimously with a standing ovation from summit participants, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, members of the National Assembly, serving and former governors, and APC members from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Governor Uzodimma, speaking on behalf of the Progressive Governors Forum, emphasised the governors’ commitment to mobilising resources and ensuring victory for Tinubu in their respective states.
He declared, “That for Nigeria to get to her destination faster in prosperity, that the president should be used and adopted as our flag bearer for 2027 presidential election, for a second term in office.” He charged APC governors to actively market federal government policies and secure electoral wins in 2027.
Echoing this sentiment, the leadership of the National Assembly also threw its weight behind President Tinubu.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio moved the motion for endorsement, highlighting Tinubu’s political acumen and the positive trajectory of the nation’s economy under his watch.
“In view of the political sagacity of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the fact that he has, even in difficult times, set Nigeria on a path of sustainable growth—as confirmed by the International Monetary Fund—and in view of the excitement of Nigerians, particularly at the grassroots, and the overwhelming support from members of the National Assembly, I move that President Tinubu be adopted as the sole presidential candidate of our great party for the 2027 elections,” Akpabio declared.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, also seconded the motion, drawing parallels between some of Tinubu’s economic policies and the monetarist reforms of the late UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
Abbas remarked, “Mr President, your decisive removal of fuel subsidy and unification of the naira closely mirrors the monetarist revolution and privatisation drive of the late Margaret Thatcher in the UK.” He commended Tinubu for ending decades of subsidy dependency and restoring fiscal health and investor confidence.
The APC National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, also publicly affirmed the party’s decision to back Tinubu.
He said, “On behalf of the National Working Committee, I hereby affirm the various endorsements and declare President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as sole presidential candidate of APC.”
President Tinubu, 73, secured his first term in the February 2023 elections, which were contested by opposition parties alleging electoral irregularities. However, these lawsuits were unsuccessful in court.
Since assuming office, Tinubu has made major economic reforms, including scrapping the fuel subsidy that had kept petrol prices low for years. While international financial institutions have praised these policies, they have also led to a sharp rise in the cost of living for many Nigerians.
Despite facing criticisms over economic hardships and ongoing security challenges, the APC’s unified support positions Tinubu strongly for re-election.
Notably, the opposition remains fragmented, with notable defections to the ruling party, suggesting minimal resistance to Tinubu’s bid for a second term.
