NewsNigeriaPoliticsSenate Approves ₦124.2bn Police Trust Fund Budget for 2025

The Senate has approved a ₦124.2 billion budget for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) to help tackle growing security concerns across the country in 2025.

The approval came during Wednesday’s plenary session after lawmakers adopted the report presented by Senator Yunus Akintunde, the Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs.

According to Akintunde, the proposed budget was thoroughly examined and passed without alteration. A total of ₦1.2 billion was earmarked for personnel expenses, while a hefty ₦98.6 billion will go into capital projects meant to strengthen the Nigeria Police Force.

He explained that the money will cover major upgrades, including the renovation and construction of police stations, the rehabilitation of barracks, improvements to health facilities, and extensive training programmes for officers nationwide.

Part of the funds will also be used to purchase Compressed Natural Gas-powered vehicles to improve police mobility while cutting down on fuel costs.

“The implementation of this budget must begin without delay,” Akintunde said, stressing the importance of timely action in light of Nigeria’s mounting security issues.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the budget as a significant investment in national security.

“This budget is not just numbers on paper; it is a crucial investment in the safety and well-being of every Nigerian,” he said. “The committee must ensure proper oversight so that every kobo appropriated is used effectively for the benefit of the police and the Nigerian people.”

The Nigeria Police Trust Fund was created to provide long-term funding support for police training, welfare, and operations, independent of regular federal allocations.
