Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State has granted full pardon to 11 inmates who had been sentenced to death for their roles in a deadly communal clash.

The announcement was made in Minna on Tuesday by the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Nasiru Mu’azu.

He said the inmates were convicted in connection with a violent conflict between the Gaba and Anfani communities in Lavun Local Government Area, a dispute that tragically claimed lives and destroyed property.

“The inmates were involved in a communal clash between Gaba and Anfani communities of Lavun Local Government Area of the state, which led to the loss of lives and property,” Mu’azu explained.

According to him, the Governor exercised his constitutional powers after thoroughly reviewing a formal request, which was carefully considered with the State Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy.

“This state pardon is also part of the reconciliatory efforts to ensure lasting peace between both communities,” he added. “Several meetings had been held, and all issues resolved.”

Mu’azu noted that the pardon was signed by the Governor on 28 May and has since been gazetted.

When asked whether others facing similar circumstances might benefit from such mercy, the Commissioner advised affected communities to make formal representations to the state government.

“Communities or individuals with similar issues should come up with a written request for consideration,” he advised.

Those granted clemency include Mohammed Mohammed, Nana Sheshi, Isah Nmadu, Mohammed Mohammed Ndabida, Abubakar Salihu, and Baba Shaba. Others are Adamu Babaminin, Haruna Mohammed, Isah Mohammed Alhaji Inuwa, Ibrahim Mohammed, and Mohammed Isah.
