NewsNigeriaPoliticsAnambra 2025 Governorship Election is about Governance Challenges –  Uzu Okagbue

The Deputy Governorship Candidate of the Young Progressive Party (YPP), Chief Uzu Okagbue, has described the upcoming November 8 Anambra State Governorship Election as a referendum on governance. In what appeared to be a campaign statement, Okagbue highlighted persistent issues such as environmental degradation and the growing threat of flooding across Anambra’s cities and rural communities. He asserted that, much like the state’s worsening security situation, these challenges stem from systemic failures in governance.

According to Uzu Okagbue, “What we have in Anambra State is a governance challenge. Just two days ago, after a rain of about an hour or less, the entire Anambra was flooded. Water channels are blocked. I have now seen over twenty different videos of this problem in different communities, and I fear for the havoc this portends for our people. I have seen videos of the same problem in Onitsha, Nnewi, Awka, and Abagana, as well as in many other places, and in all, it is the same issue of the government’s inability to articulate a simple remedy to our local problems,” Uzu said.

Mr. Okabgue, who also linked this flood challenge to the prevailing insecurity in Anambra State, said that the current government in Anambra has a fundamental problem of disconnection with the people. “The major problem is that you can govern with or without the people’s consent. But you cannot improve the people’s living conditions or create a sustainable social change without the people’s buy-in. If it is about the public good, it is people-driven, and the people must be involved because they can see that it is about them. In the same way, when it is not about them, they also know. This is why the coming Anambra State Governorship Election must be about governance challenges. Let us speak as a people and take our future in our hands as a people,” Okagbue said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, will lift the ban on political campaigns in Anambra State on June 11th, ahead of the coming governorship election, and it is expected to open the political boxing ring as the opposition battles the incumbent.
