At least five dead bodies have so far been recovered from flooding that devastated some parts of the Yola South local government area of Adamawa State, Northeast Nigeria, as rescue operations are still ongoing to recover missing persons, authorities said.
No fewer than 55 people were injured and are receiving treatment at Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola.
Ladan Ayuba, head of operations, Adamawa/Taraba states at the National Emergency Management Agency, said the overnight downpour submerged houses and infrastructure, and many were evacuated and resettled in temporary camps.
“Wooden boats were deployed to rescue trapped residents, Ayuba said.
The state programme officer, UNFPA, Dr Danladi Idrisa, spoke on the emergency response by the organization, saying, “UNFPA has already provided a temporary clinic at the camp and distributed some relief items to the victims”.
The Branch Secretary of the Nigeria Red Cross Society, Mallam Idris Mohammed, said that over 300 individuals have so far been registered at Aliyu Mustapha College, Yola, and A.A Namtari memorial primary school, Yola.
Adamawa State Deputy Governor Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta George, who visited the scene, said the government will ensure that victims get necessary assistance.
Recall that on Tuesday, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency issued a fresh flood alert for 28 states, Adamawa inclusive, and the Federal Capital Territory, warning of potential large-scale flooding through Aug. 5.
According to the agency, more than 739 communities across 162 local government areas could be affected by the flood in the coming days.
