The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has formally expelled former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, from its ranks, accusing him of gross indiscipline and unconstitutional conduct.
In a statement issued on Monday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ambassador Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, disclosed that the National Working Committee (NWC) ratified El-Rufai’s expulsion following recommendations from the party’s ward and state levels in Kaduna.
According to Aiyenigba, El-Rufai allegedly bypassed the proper registration process by forging his own membership documents and declaring himself “number 001 in the SDP membership register of Unguwar Sarki Ward, Kaduna North Local Government Area,” despite records showing no such entry existed through legal means.
The party described El-Rufai’s actions as fraudulent and a breach of the SDP Constitution, further distancing itself from any political negotiations he is reportedly undertaking with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“The SDP at all levels disassociates, disclaims, disfellowships, excommunicates Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai as a member of the SDP; and to the extent that he purportedly claims membership by self-registration or any other means, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai is consequently expelled from the membership of the Social Democratic Party anywhere in Nigeria and globally,” the statement read.
It added that the NWC’s decision was made under its constitutional powers as stated in Article 19.1, 19.3(i), and 19.5 of the SDP Constitution (2022, as amended). The party cited El-Rufai’s public declaration for the ADC, and attempts to co-opt the SDP into a proposed coalition without official authorisation, as grounds for disciplinary action.
The party further accused him of backing an illegal National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for 25 July 2025, aimed at destabilising the SDP.
Consequently, the former governor has been barred from applying for membership, participating in, or contributing to the activities or operations of the party for a period of 30 years.
“Members of the SDP across Nigeria and the general public are by this public notice informed that Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai is not a member of the SDP, and does not represent the interests of the party at any level, and for any purpose or to any intent,” the statement continued.
The party also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant institutions to take note of El-Rufai’s expulsion and ineligibility for party membership until 28 July 2055.
