One of the 13 children rescued by the Adamawa State government in collaboration with security agencies from a trafficking syndicate in Anambra state is currently receiving treatment at the Yola Specialist Hospital.
A six-year-old Mohammed Mohammed had undergone surgeries on his two thighs to remove abscesses formed as a result of the beating from the traffickers.
Recall that the children, aged between 5 and 9, were abducted from different parts of Adamawa and sold to a buyer in Nnewi, Anambra State, and were rescued following a coordinated effort between the Adamawa State Government and security agencies.
The operation led to the arrest of a 45-year-old woman, Mrs. Ngozi Abdulwahab, a resident of Jambutu in Yola North Local Government Area of Adamawa State, who sold the children to a 65-year-old woman, Mrs. Uche Okoye, based in Kabuku, Nnewi, Anambra State.
Adamawa state Deputy Governor, Professor Kaletapha Farauta, told Journalists on Monday after visiting the teenager at the hospital, that Mohammed obtained pyomyosities from the hands of his traffickers due to severe beating.
She explained that the ailment was discovered when the trafficked children were rescued and taken to the hospital for a medical checkup.
“We are here on a follow-up of a young boy who was rescued after being stolen from their parents and sold to Anambra state.
“Initially, we brought them for a medical screen, and it was at that point, the boy was admitted,” Farauta said.
The Deputy Governor expressed happiness with the level of recovery, attributing it to the good care he is receiving in the hospital.
Dr. Dauda Wadinga, Medical Director of the Yola Specialist Hospital, said the boy is responding to treatment and would soon be discharged.
” Hopefully, the boy would be discharged on Tuesday,” Wadinga added.
The CMD noted that surgeries were conducted on the boy, and a litre of fluid was removed from each of the thighs.
He added that the parents and hospital personnel are taking good care of the boy.
