NewsNigeriaWomen’s Rights Group Empowers 5,000 Widows, Others In Kebbi

A women’s rights group, Mata Zalla, has empowered over five thousand widows and divorcees in Kebbi State to enable them to live a decent life.

Speaking about the empowerment project to journalists in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State on Thursday, the coordinator of the group, Ahmed Abdulllahi said that vulnerable women in the state were trained and empowered to enable them to cater for the education and feeding of their children.

“Women are economically weak, and if left without support, the male gender could take advantage of their condition to lure them into prostitution, hence our reason for training and empowering them,” he said.

According to him, part of the corporate social responsibility of the women’s rights group includes giving protection to women against domestic violence, such as rape and bullying by their spouses at home, for married couples.

He noted that the association with a membership strength of over eight thousand is a self-sponsored group, except for occasional support they get from well-spirited individuals, particularly the wife of Kebbi State governor, Hajia Nafisa Nasir Idris, who gave them a huge financial support, which was used in training the widows and divorcees.

The support was also extended to girl child education and voter education awareness campaigns, where the twenty local councils in the state received support to facilitate their movement to those areas to create awareness among women in the rural areas to come out en masse to register or renew their voter cards ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He urged women to come register with the association in order to benefit from the help they are rendering to weak women in society.
