BusinessNewsNigeriaAbandoned Niger Gas Company Enugu Revived After Decades of Neglect

The Enugu State Government on Thursday unveiled the revived Niger Gas Company Limited situated at Emene in Enugu East Local Government in Enugu State, Nigeria.

The company, which had lain waste for over 3 decades, is one of the many government facilities the present administration earmarked for revival in its bid to rid the state of moribund assets.

Niger Gas Company Limited was established in 1962 by Dr. Michael Okpara, Premier of Eastern Nigeria, in partnership with Siad Machine Impianti. The newly revamped Company creates over 100 and 5000 direct and indirect jobs, respectively.

At the unveiling ceremony, the Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, revealed, “Nigergas Company Limited, fully revamped and upgraded after more than three decades of dormancy, has already created over 100 direct jobs for skilled and semi-skilled workers, and will generate more than 5,000 indirect jobs across distribution, fabrication, transportation, and the wider supply chain.”

Niger Gas Company now revived after decades of neglect.

“What we revived today is not merely steel and pipes, but the restoration of purpose, dignity, and productivity to a site that once symbolized Eastern Nigeria’s industrial promise. When we speak of raising Enugu’s GDP from $4.4 billion to $30 billion, it is not empty rhetoric. It is grounded in the conviction that Enugu can build a diversified, self-reliant economy if we muster the will to do things differently and boldly embrace the future.”

Dr. Mbah also reveals, “We approved a comprehensive rehabilitation programme and adopted a management model that combines public ownership with private-sector performance discipline. Ownership remains with the public, but operations will follow modern, accountable, commercially viable principles.”

On the capacity of the revamped Company, Dr. Mbah disclosed, “Niger Gas Company now returns to production with modern equipment and upgraded technical capacity to meet urgent healthcare and industrial needs. The plant now produces 100 cubic metres of oxygen per hour and 45 cubic metres of acetylene per hour.”

The company is also expected to produce nitrogen, argon gas, carbon dioxide, and Compressed Natural Gas, CNG.

The facility will not only guarantee a steady local supply of medical oxygen but, importantly, at reduced cost as it cuts dependence on distant and costly sources.

The Enugu State Governor further extolled the advantages of the revamped Company states, “It will also provide reliable industrial gases to welders, agro-processors, and manufacturers, improve clinical outcomes, reduce production costs, and power businesses that sustain livelihoods.”

“The impact will ripple outward: lowering costs, speedy turnaround, strengthening our revenue base, and creating fresh opportunities for MSMEs.”

“I commend the Managing Director of the Enugu State Investment Authority and Commissioner for Trade, Investment and Industry, Dr. Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo; the engineering firm, Ten Gas Development Ltd (a division of INDEV Group), and the community leaders of Emene for their roles in reviving Niger Gas.”

Dignitaries present praised the Governor for not towing the same line as his predecessors but deemed it worthy to resuscitate abandoned projects for the good of the state.

The Chairman, Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Samuel Asadu; Community leader and health consultant, Dr. Joy Uduji; Chairman of Enugu East LGA, Pastor Beloved Dan Anike, and a businessman, Engr. George Ndubeze Ugwu all commended Mbah for giving life to dead state-owned assets and building infrastructures to enable businesses in the state to thrive.
