EducationNewsNigeriaASUU Declares Two-Week Warning Strike Across Public Universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced a two-week warning strike beginning midnight, Monday, 13 October 2025, directing all academic staff in public universities to withdraw their services.

ASUU says the action is a “total and comprehensive” strike and the period is intended to force the Federal Government to conclude negotiations over longstanding demands.

During a press conference in Abuja on Sunday, ASUU President Prof. Chris Piwuna affirmed that the union’s ultimatum had lapsed without a satisfactory government response.

He lamented the government’s slowness in meeting the unide’s demands, accusing officials of repeatedly dragging their feet in negotiations.

At the same time, the Federal Government has appealed to ASUU to postpone the strike, assuring that negotiation efforts are underway.

The Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said that a technical working group is finalising a counteroffer to present to ASUU, as directed by President Bola Tinubu, in a bid to avert disruption.

While the government says progress is being made, ASUU maintains that previous promises have been broken and that patience has run out.

In a post earlier shared on its social media pages, ASUU noted that, “ASUU does not delight in strikes. But when all avenues of engagement are exhausted and agreements are ignored, industrial action becomes a last resort. The truth is clear: strike seems to be the only language the government understands.”

All branches of ASUU are expected to begin withdrawing services at midnight, Monday, 13 October 2025.

At the end of the two-week warning period, ASUU plans to reconvene to decide whether to escalate to a comprehensive, indefinite strike.
