As part of efforts to strengthen community security and improve accountability in service delivery in five states across the country, the Bishop Matthew Kukah Centre is set to train 1,000 local security personnel.
The Executive Director of the Centre, Father Atta Barkindo, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ engagement on Improving Community Security Initiatives for Accountability and Service Delivery held in Katsina.
He said the five selected states, which include Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Benue, were chosen based on their existing efforts to establish state-backed security outfits.
Represented by the Project Manager of the Centre, Teerser Bamber, Father Barkindo explained that the initiative was inspired by the growing insecurity and decades of violence in Nigeria, particularly in the North-West and North-Central regions.
Father Barkindo noted that there is an increasing demand for well-trained community security outfits to complement formal security agencies in tackling insecurity.
“The project is implemented across five states, and in each state, we are going to train two hundred personnel of the states’ sanctioned security outfits,” he said.
Governor of Katsina State, Dr Dikko Radda, who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Victims of Banditry, Alhaji Sa’idu Ibrahim, commended the centre for its initiative.
He said the programme aligns with the state government’s ongoing efforts to enhance security and restore peace in affected communities.
In an interview, the Chairperson of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), Katsina State Chapter, Hajiya Wasila Saulawa, expressed appreciation to the Kukah Centre for organizing the engagement.
“We commend the Kukah Centre for bringing together key stakeholders to discuss and find sustainable solutions to our security challenges,” she said.
The event was attended by representatives of relevant Federal and State Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, various security agencies, representatives of the Emirs of Katsina and Daura, the State Chairman of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, members of the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations, and vigilante groups.
The session also featured a question-and-answer segment to deepen participants’ understanding of the Centre’s mission and vision in promoting peace and security across the country.
