NewsNigeriaAgencies Flag-Off Distribution Of Devices To Children With Disabilities

Following clinical assessment of 202 children comprising 111 boys and 91 girls across five states in Nigeria, the Save the Children International, with support from Global Partnership for Education (GPE), has flagged off distribution of devices to children with disabilities.

The device is aimed at improving learning outcomes for children with disabilities in the implementing states to include Adamawa, Akwa-Ibom, Benue, Cross River, and Taraba States.

The official launch of the activity took place in Mubi North and Mubi South Local Government Areas of Adamawa State with 72 refugees, 130 host children, and 43 referral cases as beneficiaries.

‎‎Mrs. Beatrice Ngozi, Gender and Disability Inclusion Officer for the South Zone, explained that the intervention followed a detailed clinical assessment carried out in partnership with specialists from teaching hospitals, adding that parents were trained on how to maintain and support their children using the devices.
‎ Dr. Mohammed Bello is one of the medical experts involved in the exercise. He described the exercise in Mubi as a success, emphasizing that the distribution of the devices would restore hope and enhance the educational and personal development of the children.

‎In a vote of thanks, the Education Secretary of Mubi South, Mr. Samuel Dauda, commended Save the Children for its consistent humanitarian interventions, particularly in improving school infrastructure and health services for learners.
‎Samuel Dauda also lauded Save Children for recruiting volunteer teachers across participating communities, which will go a long way towards ensuring sustained educational engagement for the children.
‎The distribution of the supportive devices took place under the watch of the Disability Working Group, Adamawa State Chapter, who expressed gratitude to Save the Children International, describing the initiative as one that benefits not only children but the entire community.
‎Communities that benefited from the intervention include Yaza and Hurida in Mubi North, as well as Sebore, Seburum, Yadafa, Mugulvu, and Madanya in Mubi South.
‎Devices distributed include eyeglasses, hearing aids, crutches, wheelchairs motorized and non-motorized), shoe rests, knee braces, and forearm and wrist braces.
‎ ‎‎Aside from the assistive devices, Save the Children has also contributed immensely to education infrastructure in the area through the construction of classroom blocks, toilet facilities, and the provision of learning materials.
