National SecurityNewsNigeriaArmy Reshuffles Senior Command, Redeploys 71 Top Officers

The Nigerian Army has redeployed 60 major generals and 11 brigadier generals, according to a memo signed on October 30, 2025.

Four of the officers, all major-generals, remain in their current posts but with new appointments.

The redeployments take effect on 3 November 2025.

The memo was signed by E.L Okoro, the Military Secretary (Army), as reported by TheCable.

It directs that officers must assume their new primary assignments on the effective date, and that the receiving formation or unit must notify the Army’s Administrative/Personnel Department (ADQ Dept of MS) once the officer reports for duty.

It also warns: “Formations/unit commanders are to take immediate administrative action on any officer who fails to report on the effective date of posting and inform this department accordingly. Commanders who fail to release posted officers to report on the date stipulated will be appropriately sanctioned.

“Commanders will also be held responsible for lapses in the implementation of the directive contained herein.”

Another clause reads: “It is the responsibility of all formations/unit commanders whose officers are affected by this posting to implement accordingly.”

While most officers are moving to new formations or roles, four major-generals remain in their current formation or unit but have new appointment titles. These are PAO Okoye, Y. Yahaya, I. Otu, and S. Nuhu.

The shake-up follows earlier changes at the top of the military hierarchy. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently approved new service chief appointments, with Major General Waidi Shaibu elevated as Chief of Army Staff, replacing Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, who was elevated to Chief of Defence Staff.

Other changes at the service-chief level include Rear Admiral Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff and Air Vice-Marshal Sunday Aneke as Chief of Air Staff.

Although rumours of a foiled coup plot preceded recent changes in the military, the Army has not publicly confirmed any connection between that and the current redeployments.
