The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has hired 2,233 buses, 83 boats for the movement of officials and sensitive materials to points of need, barely four days to the Anambra state governorship election.
INEC Chairman Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan stated this while speaking at the stakeholders meeting at Awka, stating that the agency had accredited 114 observer groups for the polls, while 76 media organisations deploying over 500 journalists were accredited.
Professor Amupitan also stated that the commission, in collaboration with TAFAfrica, approved the deployment of sign language interpreters across polling units in the state to allow the 3,456 registered voters with disabilities to exercise their civic rights.
“All uncollected cards will be retrieved from the 21 Local Government Areas in the state and safely kept at the Central Bank of Nigeria until after the election. This is to address the unsatisfactory voter apathy during the election.
“We have also, in collaboration with TAFAfrica, approved the deployment of Sign Language Interpreters across polling units in Anambra state to allow the 3,456 registered voters with disabilities in Anambra State exercise their civic rights.
“TAFAfrica has described this decision as a landmark decision in the electoral history of Nigeria.
“We have also accredited thousands of agents representing candidates and political parties at the 5,718 polling units, 326 Ward Collation Centres, 21 Local Government Collation Centres, and ultimately, the State Collation Centre in Awka.
“Accreditation tags are ready, and the date and venue for their collection will be announced. Vehicle stickers for election duty are available for collection from our state office,” he said.
Amupitan said security agencies had provided firm assurances of a secure electoral environment.
“Let me reassure you that INEC is fully prepared for this election. We are deploying the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for voter authentication and upload of results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).
“We have engaged extensively with stakeholders at both national and state levels and made all essential election information publicly available, including the final list of candidates, the total number of registered voters, and the figure for Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collected, as well as the locations of all polling and collation centres across the State.
“For seamless logistics, the commission hired 2,233 buses from the National Association of Transport Owners (NATO) and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and 83 boats (seventy-three 75hps and ten 200hps) from the Maritime Union Workers of Nigeria (MUWN) for the movement of officials and sensitive materials.
“We had an elaborate meeting with the NATO and NURTW together with the REC and the Electoral Officers in all the 21 LGAs yesterday, where the transport logistics were reviewed for effective management of the transport logistics.
“This was necessary to ensure that election materials are delivered on time, and polls start in all the 5,718 polling units by 8.30 am on 8th November.
“Political parties will, as usual, inspect sensitive materials at the Central Bank in Awka before their distribution to the Local Government Areas.”
“I urge all political actors to support this objective by restraining their supporters from violence or disruptive conduct, leading by personal example in both speech and action. Let’s all say ‘NO’ to vote-buying and all forms of election rigging.
“We have informed all the Electoral Officers that there should be strict compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the Election Guidelines, and we read out the riot act clearly to them; deviations and misconduct by poll officers will have grave consequences, while compliance and diligence will be rewarded,” he said.
Also speaking, the Supervising National Commissioner, Dr Ken Ukeagu, said: “Configuration of 6,879 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) has been completed.
“This number comprises 5,718 for main polling units, 183 for split polling units, and 978 as backup devices.”
He also noted that the training of staff was completed yesterday (Tuesday, 4th November 2025).
