The Adamawa Jail Delivery Committee (JDC), led by the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman, has discharged 55 inmates after their cases were reviewed by the committee.
The committee, however, convicted 32 inmates awaiting trial and granted bail to 40 others.
Some of the discharged cases were based on health grounds and disproportionate sentencing, while several civil cases were reviewed and reduced.
The committee conducted its routine legal operation aimed at de-congesting correctional centres across the state.
The exercise was conducted at an 800-capacity facility at Yolde‑Pate Correctional Centre, Yola in Yola South LGA, but the facility is currently housing 4,022 inmates.
Cases that received unfavourable adjudication by the JDC include culpable homicide, rape, and “shilla” gangsterism involving phone theft and attempted murder.
Addressing the released inmates, Adamawa State Chief Judge Justice Hafsat Abdulrahamman admonished them to behave in a good manner and refrain from any act that would lead to their return; instead, they should engage in meaningful ventures, warning that future offenses would attract severe legal consequences.
In a statement, the State Comptroller of the Correctional Service, Mr. Odunlami Jalil Ajani, expressed appreciation to the committee for facilitating the decongestion and pledged the service’s continued support.
