Former Vice National chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Eddy Olafeso, and former zonal organising secretary, South-West, PDP, Chief Taiwo Kuye have vowed that nothing will stop the November 15 and 16 national convention of the party from holding.
Olafeso, who spoke in an interview while reacting to the Abuja High Court judgment halting the scheduled national convention, stated that the judgment is inconsequential in view of the previous Supreme Court judgment that addressed matters related to the internal issues of political parties.
It will be recalled that a Federal High Court in Abuja has again halted the PDP’s planned national convention, scheduled to take place in Ibadan, Oyo State, between November 15 and 16.
The court also barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from supervising, monitoring, or recognising any outcome from the planned convention where national officers were expected to be elected.
Justice Peter Lifu issued the restraining order on Tuesday while ruling on an application filed by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido.
Olafeso added, “We’re not stopping at anything with our convention. This judgment is not relevant; it’s inconsequential. It’s inconsequential compared to the Supreme Court judgment that already establishes the fact that the internal issues of the party belong to the party and have nothing to do with the court. It’s the duty and responsibility of political parties to address their own internal issues.
“I don’t think there’s anything that would distract us. They’ve actually benefited from the rotting situation that Nigeria has become in the last few decades and nobody is backing out, but eventually they’ll be forced to back out.
“We’re ready to do this last battle of the frontiers. No individual is God. And no individual is bigger than the party of which he or she actually subscribed to be a member and suddenly just hijacked the party for personal use.” Olafeso added.
Chief Taiwo Kuye, former zonal organising secretary, South-West PDP, corroborated Olafeso. On his part, he stated that the distractors won’t stop the convention from holding because the Supreme Court judgment has already settled the matter of whose responsibility lies in addressing the party’s internal issues.
The former director of the 2023 presidential campaign committee berated the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and his ally, Sam Anyanwu, for their actions to destroy the party, stressing that there’s no going back on the scheduled national convention.
Kuye said, “Those who are planning to stop the convention have failed because the Supreme Court judgment is there for all to see whose job it is to handle the internal affairs of the party.
“Wike and his allies, including Sam Anyanwu, will try their mischief, but they won’t succeed.
“I’ve invoked the spirit of the founding fathers of the PDP to deal with those who want to destroy our party. The most democratic and biggest party in Africa. They won’t succeed.” Kuye added.
