No fewer than 32,000 livestock farmers in Niger State would benefit from the World Bank-assisted Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES).
This is part of efforts to empower beneficiaries in line with the state and federal governments’ strategies for developing the livestock sub-sector.
Mr Jiya Danladi Mohammed, L-PRES State Project Coordinator, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Minna, saying the targeted farmers would benefit from a range of interventions, including artificial insemination services for cattle and automated, solar-powered chicken processing and packaging hubs for poultry clusters.
“The implementation period for L-PRES is six years for now and may be extended as the project progresses. States are allowed to choose their target value chains, and for us in Niger State, we are focusing on beef, poultry, sheep, and goats.
“The project is designed to boost productivity, strengthen resilience, and reduce farmer-herder conflicts and focuses on four key livestock value chains in Niger State,” he said.
Mohammed highlighted some achievements recorded under the programme, including the construction of 19 solar-powered boreholes in communal grazing areas across selected pastoral communities and the procurement of 50 motorcycles for extension agents.
The L-PRES Coordinator, while reaffirming the state’s commitment to accountability, assured the World Bank of the judicious utilisation of allocated resources and called for timely approvals to ensure prompt execution of identified projects.
